 Wire Work Guitar.
I was asked to make something guitar or music related for a a man who did not wear jewellery. So this gave me a chance to practice making a wire guitar. The fretwork is made from weaving.It was well received, the photos here do not do it justice.

Plans for February

I have just posted January silversmith projects  and happy to have kept to the months aims.I had a good practice at bezel settings and  made a spinner ring. I want to make a spinner ring for a frien and had to have a practice run.
During February I have to make a gift in a gift exchange and have a lot of ideas to put together and learn a new technique.
I also intend to merge silversmith and wire weaving,probably starting with some copper examples.I want to make a weaved band to mount over a ring like in a spinner ring. I also have  a ring to make for my daughter and a soldered and weaved bezel for a stone setting.
I really need to wrap some of the lovely sea glass I have collected.

In progress, messy.

I made the stone setting to go on the ring.However when finishing the ring I decided I liked it plain.I wear it everyday now. I was intending to make another ring and decided to finish stone setting first.Last minute change of plan resulted in this pendant.I can still add it to a ring when I  fancy a change from the pendant.This is stone setting number 4 and was definitely easier than the others, The ring and pendant need a special polish finish.

Lots of folk are entering formalised jewellery competitions where they make pieces each week etc. Must be a great challenge. Whilst that is not for me just now I have decided to do a monthly  Year of jewellery post on here.

This was my very first setting at night classes just  finished in December,Silver and turquoise gemstone

I  intend to post at least once per month this year with my challenges. This ring was made on 4th January and is my third setting. I am intending to crack this technique and other silver smithing skills this year.

The stone setting is a big challenge so many things that I am frightened will go wrong so a big learning curve. Need to do progress photos of next one.
This is still challenging me in soldering filing and finishing.

Learning to Viking Knit

I love wire work jewellery and last week eventually got around to viking knitting. I have loved the viking chains for some time but was put off trying by the expensive tool that you appeared to need for this.
I realised I could make my own kit and here it is.

It is a wooden spoon priced 59p  with a daisy made out of wire on the top with a plastic tie.
You make the daisy to thread the wire through. I was advised to use a thin enough wire for the daisy so you can pull it through a draw plate. But you can remove the daisy before doing so.I found I did not really need the tie since you can hold on the daisy whilst you weave.You can male your own draw plate by drilling different size holes on a length of wood. But I used a knitting needle gauge I got for £2.50 at a craft shop.Not bad a hoem made kit for around £3 and it works,

Granny be Proud

I enjoyed myself at the fair on  Sunday, it was nice to meet everyone again and to talk to folk as mad as I am for jewellery. Its a lovely hot day today. No jewellery making today, just a wee quiz from Emil age ten.

They are wrapped very loosely with no fancy detail, I had to restrain myself, no swirls ha,ha.

I will add black cord with matching handmade clasps.

Drilling Sea glass with a Dremel

I usually wire wrap sea glass .Today I had fun drilling sea glass with my new dremel and diamond tipped drill bits. Its a wee bit tricky, however I was able to drill this lovely aqua piece which I quickly wrapped with silver plated wire into this simple ring. I like the roughness of the seaglass, the uneven edges and the fact that every piece is different,

This is the beaded back clasp detail

This is a favorite necklace,crystals with dark blue hand coiled beads.

I really love this necklace, I like the contrast between the dark blue wire and the crystals and the antique copper details. The dark blue and clear crystal beads add sparkle and set this off well. I made matching earrings.The necklace looks nice from the back with the beaded clasp detail. This is a firm favorite make.

I love the deep blue of the Donut pendant so made this reversible

Donut pendant with silver plated wire.

I  chose this glass pendant for its lovely silver and lilac hues which go great with the silver plated wire.This is my first attempt at wire wrapping  donut shape and I just went with the shape and I think this works. I made the pendant reversible since I adore the bright blue glass .So now I have a pendant to match lots of outfits.
I have a lovely red  glass donut bead too waiting for wire wrap inspiration.
